How to Plant Strawberries: A Complete Guide

Growing your own strawberries is rewarding and easier than you think! Follow these simple steps to plant strawberries successfully.


**1. Choose the Right Time**

Plant strawberries in early spring or late fall, depending on your climate. They thrive in cool weather.


**2. Select Your Strawberry Type**

- **June-bearing**: Produces one big harvest in late spring

- **Everbearing**: Yields two harvests per year

- **Day-neutral**: Produces berries throughout the growing season


**3. Prepare the Soil**

Strawberries love well-drained, fertile soil with a pH between 5.5 and 6.8. Add compost to enrich the soil before planting.


**4. Planting Steps**

- Dig holes 12-18 inches apart

- Place the crown at soil level (not too deep!)

- Water thoroughly after planting

- Add mulch to retain moisture and prevent weeds


**5. Care & Maintenance**

- Water 1-2 inches per week

- Remove runners for larger berries

- Use fertilizer sparingly

- Protect from birds with netting
